PRESS STATEMENT: “Health Care Bill Still Bad Medicine for America”

By Andrea Lafferty, Executive Director

November 9, 2009 – Washington, DC – This is not a good news/bad news story.  This is a little good news buried in a lot of really bad news.

Our efforts to get pro-life language into the monstrous Pelosicare bill paid off.  In the final hours before the vote, Pelosi and the other pro-aborts in the Democratic leadership were cornered, and they begrudgingly allowed a vote on the Stupak amendment, which passed.  Your calls, faxes, e-mails paid off.  They needed pro-life Democrats to get their slim margin of victory.

So we can celebrate that small victory, but don’t get too involved in celebrating because there is lots to work on and pray about.

First of all, with the pro-aborts controlling both the House and Senate, there is an unlimited amount of mischief they can do to the Stupak language in conference (where they are supposed to be reconciling technical differences in House and Senate language), starting with totally discarding it.  Republican Majority Leader John Boehner said numerous pro-abort House Democrats were promised that the Stupak amendment would have no real effect because it would be “taken care of in conference.”  If you’ve watched any of “The Godfather” movies, you know what “taking care of” someone or something means.  It’s not good.

So, in spite of the recorded vote, Pelosi and her pals may strip the Stupak amendment from the “conference report” bill.

The bill itself passed by only two votes, hardly a ringing mandate for “change you can believe in” on the health care front.

All is not lost.  There are lots of procedural tactics that Senators can engage in to halt this terrible bill, and Senator Mitch McConnell and others are promising to use every one of them to stop it.

There is a lot of frustration right now after Saturday’s vote.  Some are saying that we need to clean House and throw out every member.

I have seen a lot of heroes these past few days, and we need to acknowledge their bravery.

We need to reward those good people like John Boehner, Michele Bachman and others with our prayerful support. They did their best to stop this costly and ineffective bill.  But we do need to take a long, hard look at those who voted for it and begin the process of replacing those we can replace with good, solid conservatives.

A little righteous anger is needed between now and November 2010, to return our government to the Constitutional course set by America’s founders.

We at TVC’s Washington office are in the thick of this every day, and we’ll report back to you and identify pressure points at the appropriate moments.

Our ads on Christian radio, our banner ads on the Drudge Report and our e-mailing and phone calling helped, but all of you who acted when the word was passed, will be the key to victory in the Senate and in 2010.

God bless you and your families.
