‘Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders’ Under Attack By LGBT Activists

By TVC Executive Director Andrea Lafferty

‘Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders’ Under Attack By LGBT ActivistsMay 20, 2009LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender) activists are attempting to have a number of Paraphilias removed from the upcoming edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR).
The DSM is the American Psychiatric Association’s manual that categorizes and defines what is or is not a mental disorder. It is used by physicians nationwide for insurance purposes and for diagnosing mental problems.

The DSM has been revised several times over the past decades. It has been the target of LGBT activists because it originally included homosexuality as a mental disorder.

Gays challenged the APA leadership in the early 1970s and pressured them into removing homosexuality as disorder from the DSM. TVC’s report, “Exposed: The Myth That Psychiatry Has Proven That Homosexual Behavior If Normal,” explains how gay activists bullied the APA leaders into deleting homosexuality as a mental disorder. This deletion was due to political pressure, not science.

They’re back with a vengeance to have other mental disorders removed from the DSM.

This upcoming attack on the DSM has been outlined in Contemporary Sexuality, March 1, 2009. According to this journal, “sexual dysfunctions, paraphilias, and gender identity disorder work groups are now underway” to revise the DSM for 2012. One of the key members of the Workgroup on Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders is Dr. Jack Drescher, who can be expected to push the gay agenda during the revision of the DSM. Drescher has actually claimed that “Pedophilia is not a sexual orientation.”

Contemporary Sexuality notes that “transgender experts and activists are divided about whether to fight for removal or inclusion of gender identity disorders (GID).” Among those arguing for removal of numerous paraphilias (abnormal sexual orientations) is Dr. Charles Moser and Peggy Kleinplatz, Ph.D. They claim that many of the paraphilias listed in the DSM are “social constructs” that should be removed.

They want pedophilia, fetishism, sadomasochism, sexual sadism, voyeurism, and other paraphilias removed from the DSM! In addition, lobbyists from the SM-leather-fetish community want these paraphilias removed.

Robert Spitzer, who led the effort to have homosexuality removed from the DSM during the 1970s, led the DSM-III revision process. He asked the APA to have the minutes of the DSM-V Task Force meetings made public, but his request was denied.

All revisions of the DSM-IV-TR will be conducted in secret – and radical gays like Dr. Jack Drescher can be expected to wield enormous power over the content of DSM-V.
