Why Does AIDS Gets Lion’s Share Of Federal Dollars?
December 13, 2007 – A study by the FAIR Foundation questions why so many millions of dollars are being spent by the federal government on AIDS research when other diseases are given so little funding. The group’s name is an acronym for “Fair Allocations In Research” and was founded by Dr. Richard Darling, a California dentist.FAIR is calling for a fair and equitable distribution of research funds involving a number of diseases that kill far more individuals than does AIDS.
The group features a number of graphs and charts showing that Congress and National Institutes of Health (NIH) are spending vast amounts of research funds on AIDS research while spending very little on 16 diseases that result in more deaths.
Figures for 2006 indicate that NIH research money budgeted per AIDS death amounted to $182,807 compared to only $14,236 for diabetes; $12,403 for Parkinson’s Disease; $10,182 for Alzheimer’s Disease. Other diseases receive even less research funds from NIH.
FAIR also gives credit to TVC for taking on the NIH over its funding policies involving AIDS!
“TVC exposed the fact that NIH was funding questionable or wasteful studies involving homosexuality and AIDS,” said TVC Executive Director Andrea Lafferty. “Our Special Report on this misuse of federal tax dollars is still relevant today."
