Radical Homosexual Group Opposes New Surgeon General Nominee

June 7, 2007 – The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) has gone on record opposing the nomination of Dr. James W. Holsinger to become the next Surgeon General of the United States. Dr. Holsinger is a University of Kentucky professor, former pastor and is a member of the United Methodist Judicial Council. Dr. Holsinger is being opposed by the NGLTF because he opposed a decision to permit a lesbian to be an associate pastor and he sided with a pastor who would not permit an open homosexual to join the church.

Dr. Holsinger was on a Committee to Study Homosexuality in the United Methodist Church and authored the 1991 paper, “Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality.” In it, he noted that: “lacerations, perforations and deaths...The anatomic and physiologic facts of alimentation and reproduction simply do not change based on any cultural setting. In fact, the logical complementarity of the human sexes has been so recognized in our culture that it has entered our vocabulary in the form of naming various pipe fittings either the male fitting or the female fitting depending upon which one interlocks within the other. When the complementarity of the sexes is breached, injuries and diseases may occur as noted above."

Dr. Holsinger is also being criticized for having helped found Hope Springs Community Church in Lexington, which has a ministry to individuals struggling with unwanted same-sex attractions.

According to the NGLTF, he also supports “reparative therapy” for homosexuals. The NGLTF describe reparative therapy (which is entirely voluntary for individuals with unwanted same-sex attractions) as “nothing short of torture of gay and lesbian people.”

Dr. Holsinger’s observations about homosexuality being medically unsafe has been confirmed repeatedly by other medical professionals. John Diggs, Jr., M.D., for example, has written “The Health Risks Of Gay Sex.” In addition, the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality has a lengthy list of articles describing the various health problems associated with homosexual sodomy: Medical Issues.

Even the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association confirms that homosexuals, lesbians, and gender confused individuals have medical problems that are unique to their behaviors.

“It is the height of dishonesty for radical homosexual groups to criticize Dr. James Holsinger for writing accurately about the medical problems faced by homosexuals,” said Traditional Values Coalition Executive Director Andrea Lafferty. “If his report on the medical dangers of homosexual sex acts comes up during his confirmation hearings, Senate minority leaders should quote liberally from Dr. Diggs report and from the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association about the serious health risks of anal and oral sex.

“In addition, if he is criticized during committee hearings about the ex-homosexual ministry at his church, perhaps the Senate Republicans should have leaders from Exodus International testify to the help that these ministries offer to individuals who wish to reject their homosexual feelings. Senate Republicans should also invite a NARTH professional to testify on reparative therapy.”

Lafferty also urges Senate Republicans to expose the link between the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the Woodhull Freedom Foundation. In 2004, the NGLTF announced that had joined forces with this foundation to “study” and then overturn state laws dealing with the age of consent and sex in public places.

The Woodhull Freedom Foundation is also working to legalize prostitution, and ban abstinence-only sex education.

“The NGLTF is on record wanting to legalize sex with children and public sex. They also apparently want to legalize prostitution?” asks Lafferty. “An organization that supports pedophilia and public sex in parks and restrooms has absolutely no credibility. Whatever views they have about Dr. Holsinger should be soundly rejected by the U.S. Senate.”
