Courts Rule In Favor Of Traditional Marriage In Nebraska And Tennessee!
July 14, 2006 Washington, DC – “Traditional marriage and the rights of the American people to amend their state constitutions has been affirmed today by courts in Nebraska and Tennessee,” said Traditional Values Coalition Executive Director Andrea Lafferty today. “The 8th Circuit Court overruled a liberal judge in Nebraska who wrongly decided that a marriage amendment to the state constitution was unconstitutional. And, in Tennessee, the state Supreme Court has cleared the way for voters to pass a state marriage amendment in November! “This is a good week for traditional marriage and yet another blow to homosexual activists who are trying to redefine marriage and overturn more than 250 years of tradition in America—that marriage is between one man and one woman—not an odd grouping of individuals who claim to love each other.“These decisions also make it more urgent than ever that Congress pass a constitutional amendment that bans homosexual marriage as well as fully protects marriage from fake arrangements like civil unions and domestic partnerships.
Traditional Values Coalition opposes H.J. Res. 88, the Marriage Protection Amendment, because it will enshrine in the Constitution the right to homosexual civil unions and domestic partnerships.
“In the short term, it is also important for Congress to pass the Marriage Protection Act (H.R. 1100), sponsored by Rep. John Hostettler (R-IN). This Act will enforce provisions of the Constitution that permit Congress to control what cases are heard before federal courts. This bill will prohibit federal courts and the Supreme Court from hearing cases involving the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). This federal law says that no state will be required to recognize a homosexual marriage from another state!
“The American people have scored a major victory today for self-government and for the preservation of traditional marriage. At least 45 states currently have amendments or laws that forbid homosexual marriages. The people have spoken. I hope Congress is listening to their constituents on this important issue.”
