Alabama Is 20 th State With Amendment Banning Homosexual Marriage
June 15, 2006 – On June 6, Alabama became the 20 th state to pass a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a one-man, one-woman union. The amendment passed by an 81% margin. The amendment not only prohibits same-sex marriage but forbids state courts from forcing Alabama to recognize homosexual civil unions or domestic partnerships from other states.Unfortunately, this amendment, while having passed by an 81% margin is still under potential threat from liberal federal judges who routinely overrule the will of the people. In 2005, a federal judge ruled Nebraska’s marriage amendment unconstitutional.
This is why a constitutional marriage amendment is needed, but only if the amendment also bans civil unions and domestic partnerships—and prohibits states from creating fake marriage arrangements for homosexuals.
TVC’s report on homosexual marriage and civil unions explains why homosexuals are pushing for civil unions as an incremental step toward having homosexual marriage legalized.
