Psychiatrists Ponder If ‘Extreme Bias’ Against Homosexuals Is Mental Illness

January 5, 2006 – In early December, 2005, the Washington Post published an article describing a number of psychiatrists and psychologists who believe that “extreme bias” against other races or homosexuals should be considered a mental illness and added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Leading this effort is UCLA clinical psychologist Edward Dunbar who is considered an expert on “hate crimes” and does consulting work with the Los Angeles Police Department, LA Unified School District and the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. He is one of the nation’s most noted promoters of “hate crime” legislation designed to criminalize opposition to homosexuality.

Sally Satel, a psychiatrist and author of PC, M.D.: How Political Correctness is Corrupting Medicine, says Dunbar’s proposal is “absurd.” She thinks a mental illness diagnosis would allow hate crime perpetrators to escape prosecution for their crimes.

Dunbar, however, is supported by other psychiatrists such as Alvin F. Poussaint, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He says individuals with extreme bias are “delusional” and considers them mentally impaired.

The diagnosing of opposition to homosexuality as a mental illness is a dangerous threat to Christians and other concerned citizens who still view homosexuality as a sinful behavior or a psychological problem that can be overcome with therapy, prayer, or counseling.

Learn how homosexual activists within the APA and outside of the APA lobbied the organization to remove homosexuality as a mental illness from the DSM in 1973: Homosexuality 101 .

Dr. Charles Socarides (who passed away on December 25, 2005) has a more detailed report on how homosexuals took over the APA and gained political power over the mental health profession: “The Annals of Homosexuality.”

Now, homosexual activists and their allies in the mental health field are attempting to stigmatize opposition to homosexuality as a mental illness.
