TVC Chairman Lauds New York Court Ruling Establishing Supremacy Of Traditional Marriage

Washington, DC – “The New York Appeals Court decision overturning an effort to impose same-sex marriage upon New York state, is very encouraging news to me,” said TVC Chairman Rev. Louis P. Sheldon today. “The appeals court rightly determined that a lower court was inaccurate when it tried to impose homosexual marriage on the state through a domestic partnership law.”Rev. Sheldon believes that this decision can serve as a wake up call for states that have domestic partnership laws or are considering passing homosexual civil union laws. “This is clear evidence to me that homosexuals are using domestic partner or civil union laws as incremental steps in the ultimate goal of redefining and abolishing the concept of marriage altogether,” said Rev. Sheldon.

“In his decision, Judge Milton Williams should be commended for clearly articulating the importance of the traditional family and the compelling interest of the state in preserving this basic institution of society,” said Sheldon. “Judge Williams also rightly points out that judges have no authority to rewrite legislation or to redefine what marriage is simply based upon their own political views. His opinion deserves to be widely disseminated.

“This ruling should also be a clear warning shot to the Supreme Court for its Lawrence v. Texas decision overturning state laws against homosexual sodomy. Williams understands that judges are not to make up laws or redefine them. They’re to interpret the statutes and the original intent of the writers—not impose their own ideologies upon state governments.”

TVC continues to encourage state legislatures to pass constitutional amendments that define marriage as a one man, one woman union—and that prohibit any civil unions or domestic partnerships that counterfeit marriage.
