Maryland County Drops Controversial Sex Ed Program
May 26, 2005 – In what has been hailed as a significant victory for the pro-family movement, the Montgomery County School Board has decided to ditch its controversial sex education program. The program pushed explicit homosexual sex, provided inaccurate information on the dangers of condom use; and discriminated against religious viewpoints that opposed sodomy.Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays filed a lawsuit against the curriculum for its viewpoint discrimination. PFOX was defended by the Liberty Counsel. A federal judge agreed that the materials discriminated against religious individuals and put a hold on implementation of the materials until more facts could be determined in the case.
According to the Liberty Counsel President Mat Staver, “The Board’s actions send a strong message that other school districts should heed. School Districts may not cross the line from instruction to engaging in indoctrination on socially sensitive topics such as sexual orientation. Schools are for instruction, not for ideological indoctrination.”
