TVC Lobbyist Takes On San Francisco’s Pro-Homosexual Mayor
February 8, 2005 – Benjamin Lopez, Traditional Values Coalition’s California legislative analyst and lobbyist, has criticized San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom in recent articles in the San Francisco Chronicle for his upcoming celebration of his failed attempt to hand out marriage licenses to homosexual couples. Newsom is inviting 4,000 homosexual couples to San Francisco on February 12 to celebrate the one-year anniversary of his decision to violate state law by handing out marriage licenses to homosexual couples.Newsom’s action was overturned by the California Supreme Court in August 2004. The court ruled that he had no authority to defy state law stating that marriage is a one-man, one-woman union.
Yet Newsom remains defiant. He has been in Europe receiving accolades from liberal European leaders, but Benjamin Lopez is outraged by Newsom’s actions. “Who the heck does Gavin Newsom think he is?” said Lopez. “I’m not so sure having the accolades of European leaders is something to brag about, when really the American people are at odds [with] respect to everything that Gavin Newsom stands for.”
Newsom has been blamed in the press for helping President Bush win re-election and for energizing conservative Christians to push for state constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage.
Lopez observes: “When it comes to the marriage issue, the people of California are on our side, and they are the silent majority. You won’t see them perhaps as vocal as some of us are on the right and the left, but when it comes to voting privately in the ballot box, I am confident that they would vote overwhelmingly in favor of limiting marriage to one man and one woman.”
TVC Pushes Pro-Marriage Amendments In California
Traditional Values Coalition has sponsored two identical state constitutional amendments in California that will define marriage as a one-man, one-woman union. TVC participated in a rally to promote the amendment on February 5. At the event, Lopez stated: “We are committed to doing everything within our power to fight for the passage of our marriage amendments to not only protect the very definition of marriage itself as a union between one man and one woman, but to ensure that the benefits of marriage also stay between one man and one woman.” TVC’s amendments would prohibit homosexual civil unions or domestic partnerships.
The Assembly amendment, ACA 3, is authored by Assemblyman Ray Haynes. The Senate amendment, SCA 1, is authored by State Senator Bill Morrow.
