TVC Chairman Announces California Marriage Amendment!
December 9, 2004 -- Traditional Values Coalition Chairman Rev. Louis P. Sheldon held a press conference at the California state Capitol in Sacramento at 1 p.m. PST, to introduce an amendment to protect traditional marriage. The amendment will take language from the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) passed by California voters in 2000 and add language to it that also forbids homosexual civil unions and domestic partnerships.
The amendment will be sponsored in the state Senate by Senator Bill Morrow and in the state Assembly by Assemblyman Ray Haynes.“Mark Leno, an avowed homosexual from San Francisco, is introducing legislation to overturn and to nullify the 2000 DOMA law passed by the voters,” said Rev. Sheldon. “His language says that marriage in California shall be between two persons—making marriage gender neutral.
“Our amendment will take DOMA and move it from a statutory position to a constitutional amendment status.”
Leno’s effort is designed to overturn the will of the voters of California who voted overwhelmingly in 2000 to define marriage in law as a union of one man and one woman.
Rev. Sheldon noted: “The momentum to preserve traditional marriage has spread like wild fire across the country. We intend to add California to those 11 other states that passed marriage amendments on November 2 nd preserving marriage for one man and one woman. That is why Traditional Values Coalition will engage in the fight for marriage in California by introducing this constitutional amendment.”
TVC’s lobbyist Ben Lopez has stated: “If the homosexual lobby is insistent on pushing this losing issue of homosexual marriage, we will be just as vigilant in defending traditional marriage until the notion of homosexual marriage defeated.”
The homosexual movement reacted quickly to TVC’s marriage protection amendment. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center issued a press release on December 7, attacking TVC’s efforts to protect marriage.
The release claimed “Such an amendment would strip gay and lesbian couples and their families of the limited protections they currently have as domestic partners and prevent them from ever having the basic responsibilities and rights afforded to non-gay married couples and their families.”
