Abstinence Education Under Attack As Congress Increases Funding

December 9, 2004 – Congress has approved more than $131 million for abstinence programs in a $388 billion spending bill. The amount is an increase of $30 million but $100 million less than the President Bush had requested.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said on November 17, that Bush believes that funding for abstinence education should be equal to other sex education programs.A national evaluation of abstinence-only sex education programs that was to be released earlier this year, won’t be released until sometime in 2006. Wade Horn, assistant secretary of children and families at the Department of Health and Human Services has stated: “We don’t need a study, if I remember my biology correctly, to show us that those people who are sexually abstinent have a zero chance of becoming pregnant or contracting a sexually transmitted disease.”

Homosexual activists are working with radical sexual liberationist groups to defund all abstinence programs in the United States. This goal was announced earlier this year by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) and its new ally, the Woodhull Freedom Foundation, (WFF) a sexual liberation group based in Washington, DC. The WFF is named after the 19 th century feminist/Marxist/occultist Victoria Woodhull.

The NGLTF/WFF announced several goals: 1. Overturn laws criminalizing prostitution; 2. reforming or abolishing laws dealing with sex in public parks and restrooms; 3. reforming or abolishing “age of consent” laws to protect children from sexual predators; and 4. to defund abstinence education programs.

Liberal Congressman Henry Waxman’s office just issued a report calling for an investigation of the so-called inaccuracies in abstinence education. The publication of his report was followed within days by a demand by the homosexual law firm Lambda Legal for a state-by-state investigation of the alleged inaccuracies in abstinence materials.

Lambda Legal stated in its December 2, 2004 press release: “Abstinence-only programs are putting youth in serious danger by giving them inaccurate, misleading information. We believe these programs may be illegal in several states.”

The fact is that Lambda Legal has been waging a war against abstinence education since at least 2002 and perhaps earlier. Its web site has been promoting a “Tell Me The (Whole) Truth” action kit for parents since then.

The truth is that homosexual activists, Planned Parenthood-type groups and sexual liberationist organizations like the Woodhull Freedom Foundation want total, unrestrained access to our children to teach them to engage in every bizarre sexual behavior imaginable—and then to have the American taxpayer pay for the abortions, AIDS care, and medicines to cure dozens of venereal diseases spread by irresponsible sex acts.

The Abstinence Clearinghouse has recently responded to Rep. Waxman’s report attacking abstinence education. “The abstinence community is now surprised by this report,” said Jessemyn Pekari. “Sex education advocates are simply scared because they see their monopoly on the minds of children eroding and they have no idea what to do about it. Attacking abstinence education is their desperate attempt to hold on to the power they have held without accountability for four generations. Waxman and his band of merry men are simply scared.”
