Louisianans Overwhelm Homosexual Activists On Marriage Vote

September 22, 2004 – Voters in Louisiana approved a constitutional amendment on September 18 that defines marriage as a union of one man and one woman. The vote was 78% in favor of the amendment. The new amendment also bans homosexual civil unions and domestic partnerships—euphemisms for homosexual marriage.

Anti-democratic homosexual groups, however, are threatening a lawsuit to block implementation of this amendment.

TVC’s Chairman Rev. Louis P. Sheldon’s commentary this week discusses the importance of this vote. He observes: “The voters in Louisiana have shown—once again—that well-informed Americans do not want marriage redefined to include homosexual relationships. When the voters—not judges—are given the power to decide if they want marriage protected, they overwhelmingly vote on the side of traditional marriage.”

Rev. Sheldon noted that voters in several other states in recent years have voted in record numbers to defend marriage from redefinition to 2% to 3% of the population who engage in homosexual sodomy.
  • In Hawaii in 1998, 69% voted to amend the state constitution to protect marriage.
  • Alaskans voted in 1998 by 68% to amend the constitution to defend marriage.
  • 70% of the voters in Nebraska in 2000 voted to defend marriage.
  • 67% of the voters in Nevada in 2002 voted to defend marriage.
  • 61% of the voters in California in 2000 voted for a proposition to define marriage as a one-man, one-woman union.
And, more recently, in Ohio, pro-family activists collected more than 550,000 signatures to put the Marriage Protection Amendment on the ballot in November. The petitions were challenged in court by homosexual activists who claimed that the petition needed a shortened summary to explain what the 55-word amendment would do.

Fortunately, on September 20, an Ohio Court of Appeals tossed out the homosexual challenge to the petitions and the voters in Ohio will be free to vote to amend their constitution this November.
