TVC STATEMENT ON HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE VOTE IN MASSACHUSETTS LEGISLATURE
Washington, DC - Traditional Values Coalition Chairman Rev. Louis P. Sheldon issued the following statement about Thursday's preliminary vote on a Massachusetts state constitutional amendment protecting traditional marriage--but that may also include the legalization of homosexual civil unions.Rev. Sheldon: Recent events in Boston, Oregon, and California over the issuance of marriage licenses to homosexual couples, make it very clear that the pro-family movement must pay close attention to the actions of elected officials and judges who openly violate the law. Officials in California, Oregon, and elsewhere have made a mockery of our system of government by picking and choosing what laws they will obey or enforce.
In addition, many liberal judges have indicated a willingness to ignore law and tradition to satisfy the extremists in the homosexual movement. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, for example, in its 4-3 decision, has ignored the original intent of the writers of the Massachusetts Constitution to impose a homosexual agenda upon citizens of that state.
While I am pleased that the Massachusetts state legislature has voted to pass an amendment protecting marriage as a union of one man and one woman, I am concerned that this was done at the expense of legalizing homosexual civil unions-which is homosexual marriage under another name. I do not believe that the Massachusetts legislature should protect traditional marriage-but then give homosexuals "civil unions."
TVC's report, "Homosexual Marriage = Civil Unions = Domestic Partnerships" quotes from pro-homosexual lawyers who make it clear that these categories are simply synonyms for homosexual marriage. "Do homosexuals really want the right to marry?" cites homosexual activists who state that their ultimate goal is to destroy the institution of marriage altogether.
Rev. Sheldon: The battle to preserve traditional marriage is about more than simply preserving the one man, one woman family unit. It is about what sort of arrangements will be considered to be "marriage" if homosexuals are allowed to "marry." Polygamists and polyamorists (group sex advocates) are waiting to push their agenda once homosexuals can legally marry. Once this happens, we will see lawsuits from group sex organizations and polygamists demanding the right to marry multiple sex partners. Marriage will then become meaningless.
