State Legislatures Deal With Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, Parental Rights
Summary: The State Senate in Indiana is being urged to pass an amendment to the state Constitution defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman. In Virginia, pro-family activists are pushing for legislation to regulate abortion clinics and in California an Assembly committee kills parental rights. The American Family Association of Indiana is encouraged by passage out of a Senate committee of Senate Joint Resolution #7. This bill is designed to define marriage as a one man-one woman union. The bill must pass two consecutive legislative sessions in order to go on the ballot in 2006.AFA leader Micah Clark is urging Hoosiers to urge passage of SJR 7. A homosexual web site has posted some encouraging statistics on the unpopularity of same-sex marriage at the state level: Gaydemographics.
In Virginia, pro-family activists with The Family Foundation of Virginia are urging passage of HB 116 sponsored by Del. Bob Marshall of Manassas. His legislation would require abortion clinics to be regulated like ambulatory surgery centers. The bill was passed by the House on January 28 and now goes to the Senate where it faces tougher opposition.
Family Foundation legislative affairs director Virginia Cobb has noted: "If these clinics truly cared about women's health they would have their own rigorous standards and this bill would be unncessary. The General Assembly, however, simply cannot trust those who profit from this procedure to govern themselves." For more information on HB 116, access: The Family Foundation.
In the California Assembly, liberals on an education committee killed a bill promoted by Traditional Values Coalition that would have restored parental rights to the state's educational system.
Our favored bill, AB 950 was designed to restore several provisions for parental rights to a sex education law that went into effect on January 1, 2004. The bill would have made it illegal for teaching materials to advocate drug use, a particular sexual practice, or sexual activities; it would have mandated that schools get parental permission before their children are allowed to hear guest speakers discuss AIDS prevention; and that parental permission is required whenever children are taught anything about AIDS or sexuality.
A panel of eight liberal Democrats on the Assembly Education Committee voted against AB 950, thus killing it.
