Who CAIRs About the Constitution?

Members of the pro-Islamist Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR) have challenged GOP presidential hopeful Speaker Newt Gingrich on his statement that Muslims should renounce Islamic shariah law.  Traditional Values Coalition president Andrea Lafferty responded to CAIR’s statement:

“Speaker Gingrich was absolutely correct in his sentiment that Muslims should renounce Islamic shariah -- a code of conduct that much unlike Catholic canon law or Jewish Halacha law -- seeks to subvert and supplant American laws and civil liberties with an alien and abusive code that refuses to extend the same liberties it would claim for itself.

“What CAIR fails to mention in their cries for religious freedom is the utter lack of reciprocation shariah shows for its victims.  Religious liberty is a two-way street, not a one way path to Mecca.

“Muslims are just beginning on the path that many faiths and traditions have embarked upon in the United States.  The questions are simple to answer:

  • Will Muslims respect the U.S. Constitution as the law of the land?
  • Will Muslims reject violence as a means of jihad
  • Will Muslims respect the equal rights of women and religious minorities in the context of American jurisprudence?
  • Will Islam respect the rights of conscience?
  • Will Muslims respect the United States Constitution and the equal station of every human being?

“If the answers to these questions are “no” based on the restrictions of shariah, then Gingrich is absolutely correct in questioning the suitability of Muslims in American governance.  TVC welcomes the day when CAIR and other “moderate” Muslims can unequivocally answer yes to all five questions.”
