In a new revelation of wasteful spending at the National Institutes of Health, the Traditional Values Coalition, which has conducted a six-month investigation into NIH’s budget, has found that, in the past 2.5 years alone, the NIH has awarded more than $30 million to Chinese scientists working at Chinese universities and institutions to research Chinese medical issues—with more than $90 million going to the Chinese government over the last decade. This is in addition to millions granted to American institutions studying Chinese health issues. This followed up last week’s revelation that the NIH has paid more than half a billion in grant monies to researchers to conduct bizarre projects such as trying to find out if a mother rat, if given cocaine, will abandon her babies and asking individuals to mail in their toenail clippings.
“As our country heads to fiscal ruin, why are we giving millions in taxpayer dollars to Chinese science—which benefits China and its institutions—when they hold more than $1 trillion in American debt?,” asked Andrea Lafferty, President of TVC. “It is good to fund certain types of medical research, provided it benefits those who pay for it—the American taxpayer. It is simply unacceptable for the NIH to pay Chinese researchers to study acupuncture, or fund international research, when we are struggling to pay our own debts. That China, our biggest creditor, is the recipient makes this waste all the more incredible.”
NIH-funded projects include:
“Again, we call on the Obama Administration and Congress to enforce a moratorium on NIH grant-making while a special prosecutor or another impartial investigator conducts a full review of the NIH budget,” said Lafferty. “Our research offers example after example of widespread institutional waste and a lack of transparency at the NIH, and the American people deserve a full review of the grant-making process.”
TVC released information last week on domestic waste of funds and will continue to release additional findings in the coming weeks on NIH’s practices.
